How to recognise a Georgian skirting board
Georgian skirting is usually about proportion rather than ornament. What you'll commonly find:
- Tall boards in the principal rooms, often part of a scheme with a dado rail and architrave.
- Long, shallow sweeps rather than bold beads, throwing a soft shadow.
- Restrained mouldings with a small rounded 'tongue' or a gentle S-curve at the top.
- Later owners often replaced Georgian joinery, so an older house can carry Victorian boards. Measure the section rather than going by the date of the house.
