How to tell if yours is Lamb’s Tongue
Look at a cut end, not the face: the face hides the depth of the section. Read it where the paint is thinnest.
- A long, shallow sweep runs down the face and gathers into a small rounded 'tongue' near the top.
- It throws a softer, longer shadow than an ogee or a torus.
- The moulded section is long: 40mm down from the top edge on our cutter.
- Often seen on tall boards in Georgian and early Victorian houses; some 1930s boards look similar.
Names are only labels: two boards sold as “lamb’s tongue” can need different cutters. The scanner compares your measured section, to ±1mm, against this cutter and every other one on the rack.
Often confused with
An ogee is a tighter S-curve over a shorter section (33mm head).
Regency has a deep hollow (scotia) between fillets and a bead (44mm head), not one long sweep.
