How to tell if yours is Ogee
Look at a cut end, not the face: the face hides the depth of the section. Read it where the paint is thinnest.
- Looking at the cut end, the top runs in an S-curve: a hollow (concave) falling into a swell (convex).
- This is the classic cyma recta; there is no set-back or crisp quirk at the top.
- The moulded section runs 33mm down from the top edge on our cutter.
- Very common in Victorian houses, and one of the profiles merchants call 'Victorian'.
Names are only labels: two boards sold as “ogee” can need different cutters. The scanner compares your measured section, to ±1mm, against this cutter and every other one on the rack.
Often confused with
A quirked ogee has a set-back, rounded top and a sharp quirk where the curve finishes (29.5mm head).
A torus is a single convex bead with no hollow (32mm head); an ogee always has the hollow.
